LUKAS SCHMIDT Wine rocks the ski world!
[In cooperation with Lukas Schmidt Wein ] Summer, sun, Franconian wine. That's what they say, isn't it? But does the saying still hold if you change one element of it? No, not summer, sun, cactus - the Franconian wine has to stay in it. So winter , sun, Franconian wine, exactly. That sounds a bit strange at first, because since when do people drink Franconian wine in winter, and since when does the sun shine in winter? But it's actually true. Lukas Schmidt has succeeded in creating the official World Cup wine of the German Ski Association. A Franconian wine, even a Silvaner! Of course I wanted to try out what it is and what it tastes like.
Who is Lukas Schmidt?
Lukas Schmidt is a winemaker in Bullenheim, Franconia. And because the wine-growing area in the town has been called "Paradise" for ages, the whole region is now known as the Franconian Wine Paradise . Lukas is - I think I can say this at this point - a real happy-go-lucky person and is always full of ideas. And just like you know from owners and their dogs, ideally the winemaker and the wines become more similar over time. So if you expect Lukas Schmidt to produce a tart, tannic wine that needs to be in the cellar for 20 years before it is even somewhat drinkable, you are obviously wrong. Lukas offers joie de vivre in the glass, smooth, fruity, delicious. You don't need a wine diploma to like and understand the wines.
So what is the World Cup wine?
There are World Cups in every imaginable sport. This particular World Cup has to do with skiing, with Alpine skiing , to be more precise. In good Austrian, you can of course also
Spell "Schi" as in Schifoan . Austria is a good keyword here, because the DSV, the German Ski Association, had the courage for years to recommend an Austrian wine for use on the slopes. Or rather for the time after weaving down into the valley. Until Lukas Schmidt sat down with the skiers and let them try Franconian Silvaner. That's what convinces sometimes. The partnership with the DSV is also ideal because Lukas himself loves skiing and, as I recently saw on his Instagram channel , was even on the Streif (you can see it in the cover photo above). But let's see what the World Cup wine tastes like.
The World Cup Silvaner in the test
Rich color in the glass, ripe pear in the nose, spicy notes from the Keuper soil, the start went well. In the mouth I immediately notice that the World Cup Silvaner glides smoothly around the curves. These are harmonious turns, there is no tilting or slipping, but the ripe fruit simply absorbs everything. But so that the whole thing doesn't lack excitement, there is a light sparkle at the beginning, which promotes freshness.
I also taste mandarin, spring announces itself in the glass.
To list everything you can do with such a wine, you would definitely need more than five fingers on your hand. The fact that the World Cup Silvaner is fun on its own is one thing. But it also goes very well with other things. Whether with cheese sparrows in the hut, grissini in front of the TV, outside on the terrace or indoors in a cozy group - the World Cup wine doesn't ask any questions, it simply gives the right answer.
Fruity, spicy, smooth, delicious, period.
If you want to try it yourself (first the Streif, then the Silvaner, never the other way around), the World Cup wine is available for 12.50 € from Lukas in the online shop .
So what should we remember? The snow is white, the sky is blue, Lukas Schmidt wine rocks like crazy!
